Steel shafts are generally stronger than stainless steel shafts, but they are not resistant to corrosion. The 1566 carbon steel shaft balances high strength and good machinability, making it an ideal choice for general purpose applications. 12L14 carbon steel shafts contain lead additives, making them easier to machine than any other rotating shaft, but also more prone to wear. Black oxide 1045 carbon steel shaft has a black oxide coating, which has mild corrosion resistance. Chrome-plated 1045 carbon steel shaft has a 0.0001"-0.0005" thick chrome-plated layer on the outside of the shaft, which can provide abrasion resistance and certain corrosion resistance. Nitride-coated 1045 carbon steel is the most corrosion-resistant steel shaft. 4140 alloy steel shaft is suitable for high load applications. They have the highest yield strength of any steel shaft; however, they are more difficult to machine than carbon steel shafts.
